The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering is sponsoring a seminar, “National Academies’ Committee on Science and Technology to Counter Terrorism,” tonight at 7:20 p.m. in Mason Hall, Rooms D3A and B.
The speaker is Mortimer Downey III, a principal consultant for PBConsult and former deputy secretary, U.S. Department of Transportation. Downey chaired the National Academy of Science’s Committee on Science and Technology and served on its Countermeasures to Terrorism Transportation Panel. He will report on the overall committee charge and brief on the published report of his transportation panel. He will also provide insights on the panel’s contribution to the strategic planning of the Transportation Security Administration.
Downey also served on the President’s Management Council, as a member of the Trade Promotion Coordinating Council, and as a member of the board of directors of the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak). Previously, Downey was the executive director and chief financial officer of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He has also worked at the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Budget, and at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The seminar is free and open to the public.
