Office of Sponsored Programs Reorganizes for Better Service

The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), which manages the administrative aspects of external funding for faculty and staff research, has reorganized in an effort to provide more support for complex research programs, says Director Ann McGuigan.

“We are adding a fourth team and redistributing some of the campus units that had previously been on the three existing teams,” she says. “This means that some areas on campus will have new people working with them. We have also reclassified some of our fiscal people to provide broader specialized support–each person does more but does it for specified campus units.”

Earlier this year, the office also added a new manager of grants and contracts, Barbara Payne-Booze. “The contracts manager position allows us to handle things more quickly, and Barbara brings a wealth of expertise from working in private industry,” says McGuigan.

McGuigan notes that OSP is administering $10 million more in research grants this year than at the same time last year, and restructuring was an alternative to hiring more people to make the office more efficient. “We’re always working at a high level of intensity,” she says. “There is no downtime for us.”

Faculty and staff interact with OSP both in the preparations of proposals and in the fiscal management of awards once they have been received. They may also interact during contract negotiations and for other types of contacts with their sponsors, such as requests for extensions in the award period and submission of reports to the sponsors.

The four teams and their units of responsibility are as follows.

  • Blue Team: Academic Affairs, executive units, George Mason University Foundation, Information Technology Unit, School of Information Technology and Engineering, University Life
  • Red Team: administrative units, College of Arts and Sciences, Interdisciplinary Center for Economic Science, New Century College
  • Green Team: Academic Affairs, College of Visual and Performing Arts, Graduate School of Education, School of Law, School of Management, School of Public Policy
  • Yellow Team: Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study, College of Nursing and Health Science, School of Computational Sciences
