Mason Chemist Receives $1 Million Prize for Water Filtration System

Abul Hussam, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, received the 2007 Grainger Challenge Prize for Sustainability Gold Award of $1 million yesterday from the National Academy of Engineering. The award recognized his innovative solution for removing arsenic from drinking water that is poisoning tens of millions of people in developing countries.

Pakistan Senator Mushahid Hussain, chair of the Pakistan Senate Foreign Relations Committee, visited Mason last week, giving an optimistic speech that highlighted changes in the relationship between India and Pakistan that could make peace possible.

Mason Men Dispatch Delaware Blue Hens, 89-59

On Wednesday night, the Mason men’s basketball team reached an offensive peak, as the Patriots, behind the eighth-best shooting night in school history, easily dispatched of the University of Delaware, taking an 89-59 win in Colonial Athletic Association action.

BOV Approves New Room and Board Rates, Retirement Center Concept

At its meeting this week, the Board of Visitors (BOV) approved new room and board rates and approved the concept of a university-based retirement center.

Obama Visits Mason on Friday; Dining Services in Johnson Center Limited during Event

Because of the large crowd expected on Friday during Sen. Barack Obama’s visit to Mason’s Fairfax Campus for a College Democrats rally, most of the Johnson Center Food Court eateries will be closed during the event, which begins at 1 p.m. and is expected to conclude around 2 p.m.
