University Life Announces Spring 2005 Movie Series

The spring cinema series at the Fairfax Campus, which begins Thursday, Jan. 27, has been announced. Tickets are free for all Mason students and $1 for faculty and staff with their Mason ID. Tickets are $3 for members of the community. Free popcorn is available. All movies are shown in the Johnson Center Cinema; show times are 6 and 9 p.m.

Time to Pencil It in: Innovations 2005 Planned for April

Faculty members and students should plan now to share their classroom creativity for “Creativity Is Alive at Innovations 2005,” the annual expo that will be held on April 27. The Division of Instructional and Technology Support Services (DoIT) asks faculty members to add the event to their syllabi, students to put it on their calendars, and all to keep it in mind when planning projects.

School of Management Earns Reaccreditation

The Board of Directors at the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB), the premier accrediting agency and service organization for business schools, announced that the School of Management achieved reaffirmation of accreditation. Out of more than 2,000 business schools in the nation, less than 15 percent achieve AACSB accreditation, which represents the highest standard of achievement in business education.

Identity Theft Seminar Sheds Light on Invisible Thieves

With more than 9.9 million Americans falling prey to identity theft in 2003, and more than $2 trillion in personal loss projected by the end of this year, it is no wonder that people are becoming increasingly concerned about protecting themselves from such a crime. Cathy Hubbs, information technology security coordinator, recently held DoIt Dialogue sessions at all three campuses to help build awareness of identity theft at Mason and beyond; two more sessions are scheduled.

Panel Discussion on Wednesday Examines Iraqi Elections

The Center for Global Studies (CGS) and the Iraqi American Alliance are cosponsoring “The Iraqi Elections: What Prospects for Change?” on Wednesday, Jan. 26, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson Center Dewberry Hall. The panel discussion will feature leading specialists of Iraqi affairs who will present a range of views on the implications of the Jan. 30 vote and the likely course of events in Iraq over the coming months.

Shukla Honored with American Meteorological Society’s Rossby Medal

Jagadish Shukla, professor in the School of Computational Sciences (SCS), has been awarded the 2005 Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) for “fundamental contributions and inspired leadership in understanding the variability and predictability of the climate system on seasonal to interannual time scales.” The award, the highest the society bestows, was presented at the AMS annual meeting earlier this month. A reception in Shukla’s honor will be held tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Mason Hall Alumni Atrium.

Welcome Back! Spring Semester Classes Begin Today

Spring semester ’05 begins at all three George Mason campuses today. Hours of operation for buildings, services, and dining facilities have returned to their usual schedules.
