Homecoming Spirit Competition Deadline Approaching

The George Mason Homecoming Committee is hosting a spirit competition for all university departments, offices, schools, and colleges during the weeks preceding Homecoming 2003, Feb. 18-22. The department that participates in all seven events and places highest in the three judged events will win the overall spirit competition.

Off the Clock: Professor of Biology Is Student of Art

Cyndy Beck, visiting assistant professor of biology, might consider herself a novice watercolorist, but the jury for the Oatlands Art Show and Sale this past fall thought her submissions were good enough to be included in the annual show. The show, held at the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va., features artwork of historical sites around Loudoun and Fauquier counties and eastern West Virginia.

Jai Lewis Selected CAA Rookie of the Week

Freshman Jai Lewis of the men’s basketball team was selected as the Pioneer Electronics Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Week for the week ending Dec. 29.

Lisa Curry, Laboratory Safety Director, Dies

George Mason sadly notes the passing of Lisa Curry, director of laboratory safety, who died Dec. 20 from complications while giving birth to her second child.

P.J. Maddox Named New CNHS Dean

P. J. Maddox has been officially appointed as the new dean of the university’s College of Nursing and Health Science following an extensive, national search, according to Provost Peter Stearns.

Bumgarner Retires This Month, Spaldo to Serve in Interim Capacity

After 30 years of service at George Mason, Ken Bumgarner, associate vice president of University Services, is retiring on Jan. 13. John Spaldo, Johnson Center and Student Unions Operations director, has been filling Bumgarner’s position on an interim basis, since last month.

Anne Rose Is Employee of the Month for January

Anne Rose, the January Employee of the Month, is a real team player, one who is willing to go the extra mile seeing a project to completion, and a delightful person according to her nomination letters. Rose is a program support technician in the Office of Institutional Assessment who manages the office, works with various publications and surveys, and does whatever else needs to be done.
