Mason is celebrating National Professional Social Work Month with a ‘Passion for Practice’ rally on Thursday, March 22, at 12:30 p.m. in Student Union Building II, Room 3, on the Fairfax Campus.

All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend and hear from speakers Donna DeAngelis, executive director of the Association of Social Work Boards, and Mary Agee, executive director of Northern Virginia Family Services. Both will address the current trends and direction of the social work field.

“I’m beyond jazzed about the event,” says Ellen Fink-Samnick, student recruitment specialist in the Social Work Department, “because social work is such an integral part in the growing needs of today’s society. Events like this are a very huge deal within the profession.”

At Mason, the Department of Social Work is part of the College of Health and Human Services, and for Social Work Month, organizers are focusing on promoting the professional development and advancement of health social workers, elevating the health social work role in practice, policy, education and leadership, and improving the public understanding of social workers in health.

“The commitment social workers have to the future of the practice needs to be embraced and celebrated at every opportunity,” Fink-Samnick says. “The fact than George Mason can promote this celebration with our community patrons reinforces that commitment.”

The Passion for Practice event will also include food and prizes. Those planning to attend who are already involved in social work are encouraged to invite others who are interested in the field.

The next event to celebrate Social Work Month is a Field Education Workshop and luncheon scheduled for Friday, March 30. The workshop and lunch will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center’s Dewberry Hall.
