On March 21 and 22, about 200 employers and hundreds of job-seekers in the Mason community will come together for the annual Job and Internship Fair hosted by Career Services.
The fair gives students and alumni an opportunity to connect with employers in the area and learn more about their career options.
This event has been extremely successful in the past. James Barricelli, Career Services’ new employer relations coordinator, recalls being told by employers that “we do the best job fair in the Virginia and DC Metro area.”
“In terms of employers,” notes Barricelli, “we always fill fairs about a month in advance, and we usually have a waitlist.”
Career Services recommends that all students and alumni interested in finding a job or internship attend the fair.
Companies hiring for full-time positions usually look for recent graduates, and those hiring for part-time positions or internships look mainly for juniors as well as sophomores.
But the Job and Internship Fair isn’t limited to people explicitly hoping to gain employment.
“It’s a good idea to see what’s out there,” says Barricelli. “It’s an opportunity for networking, and it also helps students to understand how it works and know what to expect.”
Those planning to participate in the fair should prepare for it beforehand. Career Services suggests they do things such as preparing a one-minute “commercial” introducing themselves, anticipating questions employers might ask, and evaluating personal goals they have for the fair.
According to Barricelli, the three most important preparations to make are to “research the company, have a solid resume and be ready to present yourself – dress professionally, make eye contact, have a firm handshake and be confident.”
Career Services offers an array of workshops and clinics designed to help interested students prepare. The two main events leading up to the fair are the Interview Practice Day, on Friday, Feb. 23, and the Employer Resume Clinic on Tuesday, March 6.
