ESPN has scheduled the George Mason men’s basketball team’s BracketBuster contest against Kent State University for 4 p.m. on Feb. 17.
The contest falls on the last day of the Homecoming festivities at Mason and will be broadcast on ESPN360, ESPN’s broadband service available on certain Internet providers.
Mason (13-10) is playing in the BracketBuster for the third time, having taken wins in its previous appearances. In 2005, Mason hosted Manhattan College and took a 78-66 win.
In 2006, the Patriots played at Wichita State and took a 70-67 win that helped solidify their at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Mason won the return meeting with Manhattan last year but lost the return game with Wichita State earlier this year. As part of the BracketBuster format, Mason will play at Kent State next season.
The Kent State Golden Flashes (14-8) are led by senior guards Omni Smith and Armon Gates. Smith is averaging 14.1 points per game with 3.65 assists per contest. Gates is scoring 10.1 points, and 52 of his 73 field goals have come from three-point range. Mike Scott, a junior forward, is averaging 9.7 points and 5.9 rebounds. Junior forward Haminn Quaintance is averaging 8.5 points and 5.7 rebounds.
Mason and Kent State have two common opponents this season, Cleveland State and Duke. Both teams lost at Duke; Mason beat Cleveland State, while the Golden Flashes lost to Cleveland State.
The game will be one of the centerpieces of Homecoming 2007. During the game, 1,000 statues of Mason head coach Jim Larranaga will be given away.
The women’s basketball team will play its Homecoming game on Feb. 11 against Hofstra University.
