Men’s basketball: The Patriots traveled to Duke University’s Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday, falling to the Blue Devils, 69-53.

Duke was 9 of 20 from 3-point range and shot 50 percent from the field in the game. Mason did enjoy a 33-28 rebounding edge, including 11 on the offensive glass, but the Patriots shot just 41.5 percent from the field. Will Thomas and Folarin Campbell each had 13 points and four rebounds while Campbell had six assists. Thomas was a perfect 6 of 6 from the field. Louis Birdsong had a career-high nine points.

Mason returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 21, when the Patriots play at College of the Holy Cross at 7 p.m.

Women’s basketball: The Patriots (4-2) extended their win streak to four after defeating American University (3-7) by a score of 60-53 at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C., last Friday. This is the first time since the 2003-04 season in which the Patriots have won four-straight games.

Sophomore center Jessica Smith mirrored her career-high of 10 rebounds, which was also a game-best, while senior forward Tracy Ann Holness and junior guard Casey Quigley each scored in double figures, 16 and 11, respectively.

Mason will return to action on Dec. 20 at the Patriot Center against the University of Georgia. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.

Wrestling:The team traveled to Harrisonburg, Va., for a tri-meet with both James Madison University and Delaware State University on Saturday. The Patriots defeated both teams, downing the Dukes 32-12 and the Hornets 26-15.

Mason trailed Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival JMU 12-8 with five matches in the books but closed out the match in impressive fashion, winning the final five matches to earn the team’s first conference dual meet victory of the season by a final margin of 20 points.

Redshirt sophomore Tyler Tisdell started off the streak with a victory at 165 pounds against Jon DiVello. Junior Randy Oates followed with a technical fall at 174 pounds and after senior Jim Martin earned a decision at 184 pounds, redshirt junior Harry Zander and senior Ryan Kittrick closed out the meet with a major decision at 197 pounds and a fall at the heavyweight class, respectively.

Freshman Brian Wright (125 pounds), redshirt sophomore William Powars (133 pounds), redshirt junior David Emison (141 pounds), Tisdell (165 pounds), freshman Bill Widener (174 pounds) and senior Ryan Kittrick (heavyweight) all scored victories in Mason’s 26-15 win against Delaware State. Emison earned a 17-0 technical fall win against Andre Bland, while Powars, Tisdell and Widener all earned decisions against their respective opponents. Wright and Kittrick won by forfeit.

After Saturday’s action, the Patriots’ record now stands at 4-2 overall and 1-1 in CAA dual meets. After taking the next two weekends off, George Mason wrestles again on Friday, Dec. 29, at the two-day Southern Scuffle tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
