The NCAA announced Friday that Athletic Director Tom O’Connor will chair the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee in 2007-08, pending approval from the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet in February.
O’Connor will succeed current committee chair and Princeton University Athletics Director Gary Walters when Walters’ term on the committee expires in September 2007. O’Connor’s term on the committee extends through August 2009.
“I’m honored with this appointment to serve as chair on this esteemed committee,” said O’Connor. “I’ve enjoyed the challenges the committee has represented in my first two years of my term and look forward to continuing that model of integrity that the committee represents for one of the NCAA’s highest visible championships.”
O’Connor, the first representative from the Colonial Athletic Association on the committee, began his term in September 2004. O’Connor is in his 12th year at George Mason University and his fourth decade in NCAA Division I athletics.
He previously served as athletic director at Loyola (Md.) College (1976-86), at Santa Clara University (1986-92) and at St. Bonaventure University (1992-94). He was also the head basketball coach at Dartmouth College (1972-74) and at Loyola (1974-76). His age of 25 when he became head coach at Dartmouth ranks him as the sixth-youngest head coach to ever take over a NCAA Division I program.
