Drawing on his experiences as a prosecutor and discussing real cases as examples, Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia Rusty McGuire will give a presentation on cyber safety at Mason today.
The free lunchtime talk, sponsored by University Life, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in Student Union Building I, Room C.
McGuire is one of the attorney general’s lead prosecutors on offenses involving sexual exploitation, cyber fraud and other violations of state and federal cyber laws. He will use real cases as examples to demonstrate the dangers presented by predators over the Internet.
This presentation will be valuable to anyone dealing with students or their own children and will provide participants a heightened awareness of the risks involved with placing too much personal identifying information online. McGuire will present the necessary precautions to take when using the Internet.
McGuire, who is also a special assistant United States attorney, serves as staff attorney to the Attorney General’s Youth Internet Safety Task Force and to the General Assembly’s Computer Crime Advisory Committee. Prior to joining the Office of the Attorney General he was an assistant professor of criminal law and procedure at Virginia Union University.
