George Mason University Rector Sidney O. Dewberry has been named Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer for 2006 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Washington, D.C., Metro Area Chapter.
Dewberry was recognized during National Capital Philanthropy Day ceremonies last Friday for his commitment to improving and strengthening the efforts of nonprofits throughout the region.
In addition to his leadership as university rector, Dewberry has distinguished himself at Mason over a number of years as chair of the George Mason University Foundation and chair of The Campaign for George Mason University. He has also played an integral role in the development of the Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering and its Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering Department.
“Sid has encouraged and motivated others by his consistent and determined leadership,” says Mason President Alan Merten. “His gracious power of persuasion has touched every facet of the university. To him we owe much.”
Dewberry’s volunteer activities outside of Mason include service as a member of the Inova Health System Foundation Board, support for a work-study program for students with disabilities at the S. John Davis Career Center and assistance in developing a middle school visit program to encourage students to consider careers in math, science and technology.
Dewberry is chairman and cofounder of the Dewberry professional services firm, which has its headquarters in Fairfax.
