Men’s basketball head Coach Jim Larranaga shared his “attitude, commitment and class” philosophy with faculty and staff attending the annual Enrichment Day sponsored by Human Resources and Payroll (HR) on Friday.
Opening his keynote address with excerpts from a DVD about his team’s run to the NCAA Final Four last spring, Larranaga discussed his “formula for success” that he said he applies not only to his team, but to his family and his work relationships.

Saying, “I’ve been happily married to my wife, Liz, for 35 years,” Larranaga explained that they raised their two sons, Jay and Jon, with education as their number one priority. He said he manages his student-athletes the same way. “My family functions like a team, and my team functions like a family: Everyone has a role.”
Larranaga explained his philosophy of teamwork (“It’s about doing a lot of little things – excellence is not a single thing, it’s a habit”) and leadership (“My job is to create a vision and paint a picture of that vision so my players can reach well beyond what they think they can do”) and the importance of networking and mentoring.
He received two standing ovations from the crowd, whose members applauded frequently throughout his talk.
After Larranaga’s speech, the group separated into groups and attended workshops on flexband use for exercise; emerging technologies; coaching; handling change; effective networking; equity and diversity issues; and finding humor in stressful situations. After lunch, which was provided as part of the program, morning workshops were repeated. The day concluded with snacks; an “endnote address” by Star and Janette Muir on how to balance work and home lives; and a door prize raffle that included some 75 items.
