The George Mason women’s soccer team had a 1-0-1 week, defeating Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), ranked second place in the conference, and earning a draw with sixth-place James Madison University. The Patriots couldn’t have picked up those four points without freshman forward Kelly Keelan, and as a result, she was honored by the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) as the Brine CAA Women’s Soccer Co-Rookie of the Week.
Keelan had the game-winning goal in Mason’s 2-1 overtime win over VCU on Friday night, her second goal on the year. Keelan has five points this season, second on Mason amongst first-year players. Keelan had a team-high five shots on Sunday at James Madison, keeping the Dukes on their heels and preventing them from mounting a significant attack.
Keelan is the first Mason player to earn Rookie of the Week honors this season. She shares the award with James Madison’s Missy Reimert. Reimert was in goal for the Dukes in back-to-back shutouts of Towson (1-0) and Mason (0-0).
The Patriots will conclude the regular season on Friday when they play at Towson University at 2 p.m.
