Freshman Katie Corcoran garnered the first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Week honor of her career after an outstanding weekend in which she helped lead the women’s volleyball team to a victory over defending CAA champion Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).
In Friday’s 3-1 victory over the Rams at John Linn Memorial Gym, Corcoran’s flawless setting helped junior outside hitter Jaqueline Kohler set a career high with 26 kills. Corcoran recorded the ninth double-double of her young career in the win, with a match-high 39 assists and 13 digs.
The Allentown, Pa., native posted big numbers the following evening against the College of William and Mary as well with a match-high 52 assists and 12 digs, for her conference-leading 10th double-double of the season. She also had three aces and three total blocks (1 BS, 2 BA) in the match. Corcoran placed the ball perfectly throughout the match, as Kohler equaled her career high, recording 26 kills for the second consecutive match. Three Patriots finished with double-digit kill totals.
The Patriots recorded the team’s third- and fourth-highest single-match hitting percentages of the season against VCU and William and Mary, with a mark of .214 against VCU and .197 against William and Mary.
With the victory over VCU, the Patriots captured their second conference victory of the season, and fifth overall. With the win, the improved Mason squad eclipsed last season’s totals of four victories, and one in conference play.
During the two matches, Corcoran averaged 10.11 assists per game and 2.78 digs per game. On the season, she leads the team in assists per game (10.93), which ranks fifth in the conference. She also ranks ninth in the CAA with an average of 0.41 aces per game and contributes 3.02 digs per game.
