During the academic year, Mason’s head men’s basketball coach Jim Larranaga and several players from his team will participate in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Reading Program, while the women’s basketball team will visit a local elementary school to promote reading and academics.

The men’s team has established a relationship with three local elementary schools – Providence (Fairfax, Va.), McNair (Herndon, Va.) and Kipp DC AIM Academy (Washington, D.C.) – and will read to students at these schools, while stressing the importance of education.

Larranaga and players will read a book to the students selected by the teacher and will answer questions and talk with students about the importance of good reading, as well as healthy habits.

The women’s basketball team will visit Greenbrier Elementary School in Fairfax three times prior to the start of the basketball season. The players and coaching staff will read a book during the slotted reading time for a specific class and will also assist the teacher with class instruction. The team’s main focus while reading to the students at Greenbrier is stressing the importance of academics.
