Mason Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2006

“Hispanic Americans: Our Rich Culture Contributing to America’s Future” is the 2006 theme for Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated at Mason every year during September. This year events even flow a bit into October.
The Office of Diversity Programs and Services, along with various departments and student organizations, sponsors festivities at George Mason to promote Hispanic culture, history and distinctiveness. Approximately 6 percent of Mason students are Hispanic.
Events are held on the Fairfax Campus and are free unless otherwise noted. Some highlights of Hispanic Heritage Month include:
Wednesday, Sept. 20—Play: “Josè Can Speak”
7 p.m., Harris Theater
“Josè Can Speak” is a bold, raw and original new show that gives voice to Latino men as performed by their female counterparts. This empowering monologue-driven show will make you laugh and cry and make women and men alike think about who they really are.

Thursday, Sept. 28—Open mic: “Shades of Brown”
8 p.m., Johnson Center, Bistro
During this event, participants present and discuss Hispanic poetry and literature.
Sponsored by the Office of Diversity Programs and Services, Fall for the Book and the Hispanic Student Association.
Friday, Sept. 29—Every Freakin’ Friday: Latin Night VII
9 p.m., Johnson Center Atrium
Join in for a celebration of Latino music as part of this weekly event, which includes free food, movies, crafts and games.

Tuesday, Oct. 3—Third Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Networking Reception
6 to 8 p.m., Mason Hall Atrium
This reception provides an opportunity to network with George Mason’s Hispanic alumni, faculty, staff and current students.
Sponsored by the Office of Diversity Programs and Services; Alumni Affairs; Career Services; Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority Inc., Mu Chapter; Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc., Delta Epsilon Chapter; and the Hispanic Student Association.
