Marlies Durso Is September Employee of the Month

Number of Years at Mason: 7; she started in March 1999 as the assistant to the associate dean in the Student Services Office of the School of Information Technology and Engineering.

Birthplace: Oldenburg, Germany

Current Position: Finance coordinator in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences

What She Does at Mason: As member of the finance and human resources team, she is involved with a variety of purchasing-related issues, such as coordinating food and beverage expenses and travel authorization requests. She examines the requests to verify that they are within state guidelines, troubleshoots if necessary and forwards the requests to the appropriate offices. She also educates department staff about state regulations regarding food, beverage and travel expenses and helps new personnel understand and complete the required forms. She works mostly with staff and faculty of LAHS, as well as the Accounts Payable Department and the Travel Office.

The Most Interesting Part of Her Job: “I enjoy troubleshooting and finding answers to ever changing policy questions. That keeps me interested in my job and updates my skills.”

Memorable Mason Events That Come to Mind: “I remember attending events for prospective and incoming students and their parents. There is always so much anticipation and excitement and a reminder that students are what the university is all about.”

Memorable Individuals She Has Encountered at Mason: “Most of the people I have met in my past and current position here at Mason are terrific. I have encountered many dedicated and hard working individuals in a variety of roles, from students to department staff to faculty. I am part of a great team.”

What She Does for Fun: She dabbles in German folk art painting, plays with her dogs and granddaughters, browses antique shows, gardens and works on improving her yoga skills.
