George Mason’s men’s soccer team closed out its 2006 exhibition season with a 1-0 win over Loyola College, Md., at George Mason Stadium last Saturday.

Freshman forward Irvin Martinez scored the lone goal of the night.

In previous action, the team beat the U.S. Naval Academy, 3-0. In that game, Martinez also scored, as did sophomore forward Dan Ames and senior defender Jacob Weitz.

A scrimmage with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, resulted in a 2-2 tie.

The men kick off their 2006 campaign with a home contest against Monmouth University on Aug. 25 at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, the George Mason women’s soccer team played its lone exhibition game of the season last Friday and was able to take a win from the University of Richmond, downing the Spiders 3-1. All three of Mason’s goals came from first-year players, and every member of the team took the field in the preseason tune-up.

Sasha Vido scored twice, once on an assist from Christine Arkwright; and Leslie Cabe scored the other goal off a corner kick from Jessica Paris.

“It was a good start,” said third-year head coach Diane Drake. “We ironed out a few kinks in our system and it went well. We got to see some encouraging play not only out of our returners, but out of our newcomers as well.”

The women will also play their season opener on Aug. 25. They face Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., at 7 p.m.
