ESPN has announced that George Mason University has been nominated for “Best Moment” and “Best Coach” in the 14th Annual ESPY Awards. The winners will be selected by popular vote. Fans can cast their vote online.
The Patriots were nominated in the category of “Best Moment” for making the Final Four after downing three highly-favored opponents. The run to the Final Four, which ESPN says is “considered by most the greatest in NCAA Tournament history,” culminated with the Patriots beating top-seeded Connecticut 86-84 in overtime on March 26.
A one-hour 2006 ESPY Awards nomination show will air on ESPN on Tuesday, June 27, at 7 p.m. showcasing the nominees.
Fans across the country may vote via the Internet until the clock appropriately strikes midnight for the Cinderella Patriots on Saturday, July 8. The winners will be announced at the ESPY Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, July 12, at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.
The Espy Show will be aired on Sunday, July 16, at 9 p.m. on ESPN.
The ESPY Awards were created in 1993. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales to the event goes to the V Foundation for Cancer Research, a charity founded by the late Jim Valvano to find a cure for cancer. Valvano was the head coach of the North Carolina State University Wolfpack.
