Ruth Lynch

Years at Mason: 10

Birthplace: Amsterdam, N.Y.

Current Position: Office manager, Dean’s Office, College of Education and Human Development

What She Does: Lynch’s job is to assist faculty members in CEHD. This includes managing the schedules of Dean Jeffrey Gorrell and Senior Associate Dean Martin Ford. Every year, she organizes the Annual Opening Staff Session in which CEHD faculty members plan for the entire academic year. Lynch also facilitates communication within CEHD to ensure it operates at its peak.

On Making Friends at the University: “One of the things I like about being in a university setting is having the opportunity to meet new people in different [academic] areas,” says Lynch. Every day, she meets with a “lunch bunch,” which includes employees from departments outside CEHD. Lynch says having a large pool of friends makes it easier to perform her job. “We are a fast-paced office, and the more people you know, the better you get a job done.”

On Keeping a Level Head during Stress Times: “That’s easy to do because we have so many people that are wonderful to work with,” says Lynch. “It’s a very busy office, but everybody is very pleasant and appreciative. It’s nice to know we can make a difference.”

Mason Events That Come to Mind: “We were all caught up in the Final Four,” says Lynch, and she went to several basketball games last year. Recently, Eunice Kennedy Shriver was in the office visiting special education students.

What She Does for Fun: Lynch “loves” to go to concerts on and off campus. On the weekends she visits fine art museums, gets together with friends and takes walks. She also loves to travel and has trips planned to Nova Scotia and Spain. She enjoys playing Sudoku, doing crossword puzzles and reading books, especially biographies. “Most of all,” says Lynch, “I love to go to Boston to be with my 18-month-old grandson.”

What People Say about Her:

“Ruth not only manages an increasingly complex and dynamic office with great efficiency, grace and concern for those around her, but she has taken on a variety of special assignments and responsibilities that have raised the morale of employees.”

―Jeffrey Gorrell, Dean, CEHD

“I have had the pleasure and privilege of helping Ruth for the last five years to prepare for the Annual Opening Session of the College of Education and Human Development each fall. It is, in itself, a huge undertaking that Ruth never fails to accomplish with skilled management and boundless talents.”

―Maggie Gonzales, Office Manager, Center for Language and Culture

“Ruth is the most positive, welcoming and efficient office manager I have ever worked with. She has demonstrated exceptional ability to juggle demands of faculty, administrators and staff as well as guests.”

―Mark Goor, Associate Dean, Academic and Student Affairs, CEHD
