As many of you know, Jerry Mulherin, dean of students, has announced his retirement, effective June 1, 2006. After 21 years, to the date, with George Mason, Jerry’s retirement comes as no surprise, but is certainly bittersweet for all of us.

Jerry began his career at Mason on June 1, 1985, as the director of housing. From there he assumed the role of assistant dean of students and later was promoted to dean of students.

Jerry is known throughout the university for his attentiveness to the needs of faculty, staff and students – and of course for his quick wit! Although Jerry won’t be a constant presence on campus, his legacy will carry on for many years to come.

Jerry’s retirement plans include spending more time with his family. In the immediate future, Jerry and his wife Sylvia are planning a family trip to Europe to meet their son Mike, captain in the 10th Mountain Division Light Infantry, who is currently stationed in Afghanistan. Daughter Jeannie recently began working with the FBI and promises to keep her dad in line in retirement!

Please take a moment to recognize Jerry for his many contributions to our community over the past 21 years.

In the interim, Pam Patterson will assume the role of dean of students for the upcoming year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or Pam at 703-993-2884.
