The George Mason Patriots found themselves in an unusual position at the buzzer of the Final Four game against the University of Florida Saturday night. After a dramatic and successful run in the NCAA Tournament to date, in which the Patriots knocked off basketball powerhouses Michigan State, University of North Carolina, and the University of Connecticut, the Patriots succumbed to the Gators, 73-58.

In the first half, the 11 seeded Patriots came within one point of the three seeded Gators and were down only by five points at the half. But Florida’s Lee Humphrey was hot with his 3-pointers and Mason had little success in shutting him down. Humphrey ended up with 19 points in the game, as did his teammate Corey Brewer.

Jai Lewis, who was named the Chevrolet Most Valuable Player of the game for Mason, finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and one assist. Tony Skinn also contributed 13 points. Will Thomas and Folarin Campbell had 10 points apiece; Lamar Butler had 8, Gabe Norwood had two and Sammy Hernandez had two.
