Sophomore Joe Coughlin won both of his matches last week against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponents, compiling a technical fall and a major decision on his way to being named the CAA Co-Wrestler of the Week.
On Feb. 11 at Mason’s John Linn Memorial Gym, Coughlin, currently ranked no. 5 in the CAA in the 125-pound weight class, knocked off the fourth-ranked wrestler in the conference at 125 pounds, Bryan LaShomb of Old Dominion, in a dominating performance, defeating LaShomb by a final score of 20-1. Earlier in the day, Coughlin defeated Campbell’s Richie Apolinar 16-3 in the opening match of Mason’s 32-9 CAA victory over the Camels.
With his two victories last week, Coughlin improved his record on the season to 15-5 overall, 11-2 in dual meets and 8-1 in the CAA. He has recorded one fall, one technical fall and seven major decisions this year. In two seasons on the team, Coughlin has an impressive record of 33-17 overall and 23-5 in duals.
Coughlin hits the mat again on Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Patriots wrestle Maryland at John Linn Memorial Gym in the final dual meet of the season before the CAA Championships, which will be held at Drexel University’s Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia, Pa. on March 3 and 4.
Coughlin splits the Wrestler of the Week honor with Mike Patrovich of Hofstra University.
