Among Time magazine's best photos of 2005 was one taken by George Mason alumnus Matt Rourke, BA Government and Politics ’99.
Rourke took the photo in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina while he was on assignment for his newspaper, the Austin American-Statesman.
Time’s Dec. 19 special issue highlighted 36 photos, which included images of natural disasters, terrorist attacks, Pope John Paul II, American soldiers, an Iraqi child and Michael Jackson, among others.
Rourke's photo selected by Time — an image of a mother carrying her child away from an evacuation helicopter — was also used on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and in commercials for the American Red Cross.
While at Mason, Rourke was photographer for Broadside, Mason's student newspaper.
