After his performance at the 2005 U.S. Swimming Championships, junior Tom Koucheravy, a sports management major, was tabbed as the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Male Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season. This marks Koucheravy’s third time earning the honor since his career began at Mason in 2003.
Koucheravy closed out the weekend championships tied in 18th place (31 points), out of 113 competitors. He placed fifth in the ‘A Final’ in the 400-meter freestyle in an Olympic Trial with a qualifying time of 3:59.35, and he finished sixth in the 1,500-meter freestyle race in another Olympic Trial with a qualifying time of 15:49.21. In addition, Koucheravy placed 13th in the 200-meter free ‘B Final,’ as he finished with a time of 1:54.27.
“With his performance at the U.S. Open, Tom continues to show his dominance at the conference level,” said head coach Peter Ward. “We will look for him to swim at this elite level through the spring semester and when we get through championships in February and March.”
Koucheravy’s past honors include CAA Men’s Swimmer of the Year (2004-05), Outstanding Male Swimmer of the CAA Championships (2005), CAA Male Swimmer of the Week (Feb. 8, 2005), and CAA Rookie of the Year (2003-04).
