Instead of looking to CBS or ABC for their daily news, George Mason students might soon be tuning in to the “Brown Hour” on the Mason Cable Network for national and international news and campus events.
Led by a team of international students from countries such as India and Pakistan, or as assistant producer Jasmeet Kapoor says, “basically, the ‘Brown People’ of George Mason,” the news show covers everything from music videos to international student concerns at the university.
“We’re not just featuring things of a ‘brown’ nature, we’re showing anything,” Kapoor, a government and international politics major, says. “We just recently filmed a Top Five music chart of the songs that shouldn’t be. The whole purpose of the ‘Brown Hour’ is to show our point of view on things, what we want to cover, what we need from the university.”
About 29 students are on the staff of the show, working on lighting, camera work, editing and promoting. Student Homan Rabie, an undeclared major, is the show’s weatherman, reporting on weather as he analyzes it using his own equipment and maps.
“We quite possibly have the most diverse staff of people on campus. We’re trying to become a real group at Mason so we can get funding for any trips we’d like to do, such as filming on location,” Kapoor says.
The “Brown Hour” is committed to reach out to all Mason students by delivering domestic and international news, promoting events on campus and discussing cultural affairs.
“Part of what the students want to do is create a daily show for international students here,” says Steve Klein, coordinator of the electronic journalism minor and the faculty advisor for the “Brown Hour.” “Their mission statement sounded like something I believe in, and it is relevant to this campus and the demographics of this campus.”
The team, led by executive producer Sandeep Sharma, a communication major, has filmed three shows, two of which have played on the network and the third which is in the editing stage.
The “Brown Hour” airs at 4:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. every day on the student-run closed circuit network, Mason Cable Network, channel 19.
