Assistant Professor of Dance Dan Joyce received a 2005 Provost Research Award to fund several performances of Mark Morris’s duet “Beautiful Day” for Mason audiences. The dance, now in rehearsal under Joyce’s direction, was set on two casts of Mason dancers, Billy Smith and Heidi Kershaw and Jenna Krall and Daniel Zook, who will perform it in the Dance Company’s Fall 2005 Concert. The concert is in Harris Theater on Nov. 10, 11 and 12, at 8 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Friday, Nov. 11.
Working on “Beautiful Day” led to a reunion for Joyce, who was a member of the Mark Morris Dance Group for more than 10 years. In August, another former Mark Morris Dance Group member, Rachel Murray, who once performed “Beautiful Day” with Joyce, came to campus to set the dance.

“Beautiful Day” is performed to J.S. Bach’s Schlage doch, gewünschte Stunde, BWV 53. Plans are under way to collaborate with the Music Department for a live performance of the piece at the Dance Company’s 2006 Gala Concert in March.
Also featured in this concert is “Six by Six” by Susan Shields, associate professor of dance and Mason alumna.
