George Mason has organized a traditional New Orleans jazz parade to aid Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Led by the George Mason University Jazz Ensemble, the parade will start at 11:45 a.m. today at the George Mason statue.
Participants are encouraged to “bring your instruments, your dancing feet, your beads, and your singin’ voices,” says Sandra Hubler, vice president for university life. The jazz band will lead the parade through the Johnson Center and around campus. Refreshments provided by Sodexho will be available at the parade’s conclusion.
The parade, organized by University Life, is an effort to collect monetary donations to assist in the relief efforts.
The money will be given to the Combined Virginia Campaign (CVC) to be split equally between the Salvation Army and the Red Cross. CVC’s hurricane relief will be conducted until Sept. 16, and 100 percent of donations will go to the charities listed above. All of the donations will be earmarked for the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. The two charities were selected based upon the criteria that they were a CVC participating charity and rated as a top charity by the American Institute of Philanthropy.
Donations will aid the states devastated by the hurricane by providing medical aid, food, shelter and other needed services.
Those participating in the Mason event can make checks out to “CVC-Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund” and bring them to the parade or mail them to CVC, 101 North 14th Street, 12th Floor, Richmond, VA 23219.
All donations will be deductible on 2005 tax returns. Questions regarding CVS’s efforts should be directed to Anne Dinterman at 804-225-2159 or Anne.Dinterman@dhrm.virginia.gov.
