The Office of Equity and Diversity Services (OEDS) is starting the academic year with renewed dedication in its mission and a new staff member to ensure that mission continues to be fulfilled. Josephine “Josie” Evola, formerly with Illinois State University’s Office for Diversity and Affirmative Action, became Mason’s new associate director of equity and diversity services on July 1.
“What attracted me to the university was the opportunity to be an agent of change at a vibrant, forward-thinking institution that recognizes and celebrates the importance of diversity in an increasingly global community,” Evola says.
At Mason, Evola will be responsible for managing investigations of any allegations that Mason’s equal opportunity policy is being violated. “It is important that every member of the George Mason University community understands that illegal discrimination is not tolerated here,” she says. “Allegations of discriminatory behavior will be thoroughly investigated, and prompt corrective measures will be taken when needed.”
Evola says her first priority is to review the university’s current equal opportunity policy and procedures “to ensure they are in compliance with recent developments. In addition, as part of that endeavor, our office is developing a comprehensive training program to prevent unlawful harassment.”
Evola most recently was the acting director of Illinois State University’s Office for Diversity and Affirmative Action, which she joined in 1999 as affirmative action coordinator. She was later promoted to assistant director of the office. Evola, who holds a JD from Southern Illinois University, also spent two years as a senior assistant public defender in Champaign County, Ill.
