New Department of Parking and Transportation Opens Shop at Mason

A Department of Parking and Transportation within University Services has been established, and its new director, Josh Cantor, began work last Monday, just in time for the major decal sales days at the Fairfax Campus, which will be held in the Student Union Building II Ballroom beginning Aug. 22.
Cantor, who previously worked at California State University, Fullerton, in a similar position, reports to John Spaldo, assistant vice president for University Services. Cantor will be working with Ann Moran, parking services assistant, to oversee management of the new parking contractor, Standard Parking. The contractor handles decal sales, parking enforcement, maintenance of the parking areas, parking management for special events, and the parking services web page.
Cantor says the growth of George Mason and the accompanying complexity of parking required having a person dedicated full-time to overseeing the parking services contract. In terms of transportation, Cantor says he will be developing other alternatives besides the CUE bus, which now offers a free ride to Mason ID holders, and the shuttle bus to the Prince William Campus.
“We’ll see if we can offer carpool or vanpool programs, or offer incentives to use public transportation,” he says. However, he notes that a cost-benefit analysis might show that some alternatives are not practical. “It sounds great to say you’ll have a shuttle bus to the Field House, but you need the numbers to justify it.”
In addition to the day-to-day overseeing of operations, Cantor expects to be involved in construction issues that affect parking, and reviewing and formalizing policies. He also expects to do outreach and be proactive in working with groups on campus.
“Parking management is really balancing the special needs of all the groups,” he says, “and educating as to the sharing that goes on. The goal is to get everyone into a parking space and then get them off campus without a hassle.”
Parking Services, including decal sales, will move to offices adjacent to the Sandy Creek Parking deck sometime in mid-September, Cantor says. He and Moran will then move into the vacated area in SUB II.
