Boxing Event at Patriot Center Debuts with Mason Alum

Boxing comes to the George Mason Patriot Center for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 17, in an event that will feature Mason alumnus Mike Sawyer, BS Finance ’05, in his professional debut. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the first bout scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Great Falls, Va., boxer and star of the NBC reality television series, The Contender, Jimmy Lange (25-2-1, 17 KOs), will battle undefeated rival Perry Ballard (17-0, 13 KOs) of Martinsburg, W.V., for the154-lb. World Boxing Empire title in a 12-round main event as part an exciting evening of professional boxing.

Highly-regarded junior lightweight Lamont “Bay” Pearson (21-3-1, 11 KOs) of Capitol Heights, Md., will square off in the co-main event (opponent to be determined), while the undercard will showcase local talent such as Orazio “The Razor” Robinson (5-1-2, 4 KOs), of Woodbridge, Va., among others.

One of the Washington area’s best and most popular fighters, Lange, a graduate of Arlington’s Bishop O’Connell High School, competed in The Contender last spring. Lange, one of 16 fighters selected from across the country to compete for a $1 million prize, was considered a favorite to win it all, but was eliminated in episode eight. He was voted back on as the fan favorite to record a victory, winning $200,000. His fight at the 10,000-seat Patriot Center will mark his first area appearance since earning a split decision over Sammy Sparkman at the Washington Convention Center on May 1, 2004.
