Joseph J. “Sunny” Mathy and his wife, Liliana, are donating their residence in Fairfax and its contiguous 10 acres to George Mason. The deferred gift, valued at more than $1.5 million, is in memory of Mathy’s late wife, Sarah Garland Mathy, known as Sally.
“We are truly moved by the magnanimity of this gift,” says President Alan Merten. “The Mathy family’s generosity to George Mason spans several decades and includes a $1 million endowment that provided important encouragement for the launch of the Campaign for George Mason University. Now, once again, they have stepped forward, and we are honored to accept this contribution as a permanent memorial to Sally Mathy.”
Sunny Mathy, who grew up in Fairfax County, is a retired businessman who has been professionally involved in real estate, construction, farming, and banking. The residence and property being donated adjoin acreage surrounding the university president’s official home, Mathy House, which was acquired through the Mathy family in 1983. It is located near the Fairfax Campus.
