A reception for Martha Reiner, awards coordinator in the Human Resources/Payroll Office, will be held tomorrow from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Johnson Center’s Dewberry Hall. Reiner, who is retiring at the end of June after 17 years of service to Mason, has been responsible for all components of the university’s comprehensive employee awards program. Last year, the program received the Quality in Human Resource Practice Award from the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources.
Reiner began her career at Mason in 1988 in the Office of the President with George Johnson. In 1996, she moved to HR/Payroll. That year, Mason’s awards program began as a pilot program. It started with “three major awards funded from the central budget, along with the existing Customer Service Award and the Employee of the Month program,” Reiner told the Gazette last year. “The program has since expanded to nine university award programs, plus additional awards funded and awarded by the Staff Senate, and programs within various departments. We have a great group of awards that are very focused on the entire work life of an employee, from the time they get here until the time they leave.”
Reiner says her biggest accomplishment has been the Retirement Connection, a program she created to help retired Mason employees stay in touch with the university through free passes to the Aquatic and Fitness Center and the Freedom Center, tickets to sporting and cultural activities, and invitations to special events, among other items.
Unfortunately, Reiner herself will not be able to take advantage of this program often. She is moving to Arizona, where one of her sons lives. As for her future plans, “I’m going to spend some time decorating my new house in Tucson,” Reiner says, “and getting accustomed to the heat out there.”
The entire campus community is invited to attend the reception for Reiner. Janet Walker, executive assistant in HR, says RSVPs are appreciated but not required. Contact her at 703-993-2748 or email@example.com
