Patriots Advance in CAA Baseball Championship

First, sophomore designated hitter Casey Slattery, management major, belted a grand slam in a four-run sixth inning. Then, sophomore third baseman Chris Fournier, undeclared major, and junior shortstop Tyler Youngs, business management and public relations major, slammed back-to-back homers to key a four-run eighth inning, powering no. 2 seed George Mason over no. 5 University of Delaware, 9-5, in the opening game of the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Baseball Championship at Wilmington, N.C., yesterday.
In the next round, Mason will face no. 3 Virginia Commonwealth University at 7 p.m. today. All games can be seen live on the Internet at www.caasports.com.
On Tuesday, senior pitcher Stacen Gant, major in sports management with a minor in information technology, who started in the opening round game, was named first-team All-CAA for the second straight season. Senior centerfielder Matt Cooksey was selected to his first All-CAA team. First baseman senior Chris Looze, biology major, and junior closer Jason Mills, undeclared major, were named to the All-CAA second team.
