George Mason University President Alan Merten has been named one of 17 Washingtonians of the Year by Washingtonian magazine. For the past 33 years, the magazine has honored people who “make the region a better place.”

Merten is featured in the January 2005 edition of Washingtonian magazine, currently available at newsstands.

Others recognized this year include newscaster Tim Russert; Washington, D.C., Mayor Anthony Williams; and University of Maryland men’s basketball coach Gary Williams.

Merten is the second Mason president to receive this honor. In 1984, George W. Johnson was recognized.
