WebCT users may do a double-take the next time they plug in the familiar webct38.gmu.edu URL, thanks to a redesign of the site by Electronic Publications. “The graphical look has changed, there’s an announcement block, and links have been added that we’re hoping will help the faculty and students access resources more easily,” says Jerry Drake, WebCT administrator. The revamped web site also consolidates links from different sites “to make life easier,” including a link for faculty members to request a course folder account.
WebCT is a course management system that allows faculty members to host content and interactive activities such as discussion bulletin boards or quizzes without knowing any programming or HTML. Drake says use of WebCT has “grown tremendously” at Mason over the last couple of years, with 700 courses serving 12,000 students. “Faculty members are recognizing that they can enhance what they do in the classroom,” he says, “and content is available for students 24/7.”
Drake recommends that faculty members considering using WebCT for the first time register for a workshop or visit the Instructional Resource Center web site. Several workshops will be offered during BYTE Week, Jan. 18-21. For more information, contact Drake at firstname.lastname@example.org or 703-993-2951.
