The Virginia Opera presents one of its most applauded productions and returns with all new leading artists and important company debuts in The Merry Widow, on Friday, Nov. 19, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Concert Hall. The full traditional production, complete with dancers, is directed by choreographer-director Dorothy Danner and conducted by Virginia Opera’s own Dan Saunders.
In this tale, mischief abounds as the desirable widow, Hanna Glawari, determinedly carries out an intricate scheme to win the heart of her former lover, Count Danilo Danilowitsch, in the midst of the delightful frivolity of early 20th century Paris. The production features the company debut of soprano Diane Alexander as Hanna and the return of tenor Tracey Welborn as Danilo. Danner leads an impressive supporting cast, including tenor Harold Gray Meers as Camille de Rosillon and Saundra DeAthos as Valencienne—both making their Virginia Opera debuts.
The production will feature an English translation using Digitext Super Titles. Discussions will be held 45 minutes prior to each performance on the hall’s Grand Tier. Tickets are $84, $68, and $44. Charge by phone at 703-218-6500 or visit www.tickets.com.
