Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leroy Rountree Hassell will speak tomorrow at 5 p.m. at George Mason’s School of Law, Arlington I Building, Room 120/121. The topic is Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark case on school desegregation. A reception will follow Hassell’s remarks.
Hassell is the first African American chief justice in the 225-year history of the commonwealth. He also was the first chief justice elected by his colleagues. The position automatically went to the justice with the longest tenure until the Virginia General Assembly changed the process in 2002.
Born and raised in Norfolk, Va., Hassell received his undergraduate degree in government and foreign affairs from the University of Virginia and his JD from Harvard University.
