Two Mason athletes were honored this week by the Colonial Athletic Association. Men’s soccer player Teba McKnight, a junior business major, was named Co-Player of the Week for the second time this season, while freshman women’s volleyball player Jaqueline Kohler earned a Rookie of the Week Award after leading the Patriots to a pair of wins.
McKnight, who shared the CAA honor with Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) senior goalkeeper Saul Montero, currently sits first among his conference peers in total points, with 19, and is tied for third in goals, with seven. The Patriots (6-3-1, 2-0 CAA) host a pair of conference match-ups this weekend as Mason faces the University of North Carolina-Wilmington tomorrow at 7 p.m. and then competes against VCU at 1 p.m. on Sunday at George Mason Stadium.
Kohler has only been a member of the George Mason women’s volleyball team for a few weeks, but in that time, the freshman has shown that she can be a force on the court. For the week, Kohler, a psychology major, led the Patriots in nearly every offensive category, with 37 kills, 5.29 kills per game, 87 attacks, and a .287 hitting percentage. She also had 13 digs and 4 total blocks, along with a pair of service aces as she helped the Patriots improve to 7-4, 2-1 on the year.
For the year, Kohler has 137 kills and a .192 hitting percentage. She is averaging 3.42 kills per game. She also has 98 digs, 12 total blocks, and 12 assists.
Kohler is the second volleyball team member to be honored by the CAA this year. Junior physical education major Natalia Porosa won the Player of the Week Award for the week ending Sept. 19. The team has a 7 p.m. match at William & Mary tomorrow.
