The George Mason men’s golf team finished an impressive 2nd out of 22 teams this past weekend at the Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate Tournament. The event was held at the Rees Jones Golf Course in Sunset Beach, N.C. The teams played 18 holes on Saturday and Sunday.
After the first day of competition, the Patriots were in a three-way tie for second with Samford University and Jacksonville University, scoring a 293. Sophomore Nick DeSimone and junior Mike Cavanagh led the Patriots as the top two scorers. DeSimone shot a one-over par 73, while Cavanagh shot a three-under par 69 on the first day.
The second day was even better for the Patriots as they improved upon their first day total by six strokes, shooting a 287, which is the fourth best 18-hole team score in school history. Cavanagh again paced the Patriots with a two-under par 70; DeSimone improved his score from the first day, shooting a one-under par 71. Teammate Daniel Hurley, a sophomore, also recorded a one-under par 71. Cavanagh’s 139 placed him in second for the tournament, one stroke off of first place, and a third-best 36-hole total in Mason history. Rutgers University held on to its lead from the first day, shooting a three-over par 291 on Sunday, enough to defeat the Patriots by one stroke and win the tournament.
