“Moments, Memories, and Mission: Stories from the Field of Assisted Living” is the theme of the first National Assisted Living Employees Essay Contest, sponsored by George Mason’s Program in Assisted Living Administration. The contest is part of National Assisted Living Week, which takes place Sept. 12-18.

The National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) created National Assisted Living Week in 1995. This year, for the first time, NCAL is collaborating with the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging and the Assisted Living Federation of America.

“George Mason’s Program in Assisted Living Administration is proud to sponsor this first-ever contest on behalf of the nation’s assisted living industry,” says Andrew Carle, assistant professor and coordinator of the Program in Assisted Living Administration in the College of Nursing and Health Science. “Each day, nearly one half million assisted living professionals put their heart, minds, and energy into taking care of those in need, and their experiences should be shared. These essays are certain to strike a chord with peers, seniors, families, and anyone with a link to assisted living, while calling attention to the important work of these professionals.”

Any individual working in an assisted living environment is encouraged to enter. The deadline for entries is Sept. 30. Essays–from 500 to 1000 words–should “come from the heart.” Categories include:

  • Favorite all-time resident

  • Resident who made a difference in the worker’s life

  • Saddest or funniest moment

  • Special story of someone with Alzheimer’s or related dementia

  • Most dedicated employee or co-worker

Twenty-five entries will be published in an illustrated 8″ x 5 1/2″ book, which will be distributed to assisted living providers, families, residents, and related senior care and media organizations across the United States. Sunrise Senior Living is sponsoring the following cash prizes:

Best essay: $1,500

Runner-up: $1,250

Second runner-up: $1,000

All published essay winners will receive three complimentary copies of the book and a plaque recognizing their essay. For additional information, visit or contact Carle at 703-993-1902 or
