During July, the United Bank branch in the Johnson Center is collecting new and unused children’s books for United Reads, a program sponsored by the D.C. United professional soccer team. The focus is on books for young children, and donations may be left at any United Bank branch.
“We are a longtime sponsor of D.C. United and work with the team in its community programs,” says Diego Riveros, manager of the bank’s university branch. United Reads is one of a number of programs sponsored by the team’s charitable foundation, United for D.C. The foundation supports programs that “improve the lives of inner-city, at-risk, and other youth within the Washington, D.C., community in the areas of literacy, reading, and healthy lifestyles,” according to the organization’s web site.
The books will be given to students from two Washington, D.C., elementary schools that United for D.C. has designated as its United Reading Is Fundamental Schools. In August and September, United Bank will again team up with D.C. United, this time to collect school supplies.
