Former George Mason University wrestler Sean Carrigan (1995-97) is one of 10 remaining finalists—5 men and 5 women—on the new reality television series Next Action Star, which airs Wednesdays on NBC at 8 p.m. The male and female winners of the show not only earn a cash prize, but also the chance to star in the NBC movie, Hit Me (working title) produced by Silver Pictures.

Carrigan beat out thousands of hopefuls in a nationwide search to make the semifinalist cut. Auditions were held in various cities including New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles, and the 30 semifinalists advanced to Hollywood for a chance at one of the 14 final spots. After Carrigan made the next cut, he and the other 13 finalists moved into a Hollywood Hills mansion together.

Every week, the group endures a rigorous schedule that includes daily acting lessons and combat and stunt training. The climax of each episode features a film screen test followed by a pair of eliminations. The series was created by Joel Silver, executive producer of The Matrix and Die Hard.

Although originally described as “boring” according to one of the judges for the show in the first episode, Carrigan’s spot has seemed safe the past couple weeks. In the most recent episode, another judge was nothing but complimentary: “I think an action star is like a bullet—the smoother it is the farther it goes, and [Sean] is smooth.”

Carrigan, a transfer from Manhattan College, wrestled for George Mason in 1995-96 and 1996-97 and was a teammate of current Patriot assistant coach Mark Weader. As a junior, he competed in the 167-pound weight class, earning a second-place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. Carrigan was a tri-captain for his 1996-97 senior season and posted a 23-13 overall record, wrestling at 177 pounds. He had an overall record of 38-27 in two years with the Patriots.

A graduate with a degree in communication, Carrigan is also an accomplished boxer, having won several Golden Gloves and amateur boxing titles. He has also appeared on The Young and the Restless and Cold Case.
