The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) has announced that Daniel J. LaVista will be the agency’s new executive director, effective August 7. LaVista was previously the executive director of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, where he assisted the board in developing policy to address affordability of postsecondary education, faculty diversity, and college and university productivity.
LaVista has served as president of McHenry County College and the College of Lake County, and chancellor for the Community Colleges of Baltimore County. He was vice president for academic affairs at Cuyahoga Community College and associate professor of theater at Illinois State University.
As SCHEV’s executive director, LaVista will serve on the boards of various entities in the commonwealth, including the Center for Innovative Technology, Virginia College Building Authority, Virginia College Savings Plan, Virginia Space Grant Authority, and the Advisory Board for Teacher Education and Licensure. He will manage SCHEV’s 31-member professional staff, oversee a $3.2 million annual budget, and administer $62 million in grants and appropriations for Virginia higher education.
SCHEV’s mission is to provide state-level policy, program, and budget leadership on higher education issues. Its statutory duties include making policy recommendations to the governor and General Assembly involving Virginia’s system of higher education in such areas as budget planning, enrollment projections, and student financial aid.
