At its final meeting of the academic year yesterday, the Faculty Senate unanimously elected James Bennett, Economics, to a third term as chair. Under the senate’s bylaws, three terms are the maximum allowed.
Among the general announcements made at the meeting, Bennett noted the recent passage of a bill in the Virginia General Assembly that allows, but does not require, Boards of Visitors to appoint a nonvoting faculty member to its ranks. The Faculty Senate has long lobbied for a faculty seat on the BOV, and it is one of the senate’s top priorities, Bennett has said.
In other business, the senate narrowly approved a motion that recommends undergraduates be permitted three withdrawals from classes without seeking the permission of their dean, beginning in fall 2005. The issue was studied at the request of Student Government.
