Patriots Advance to CAA Semifinals With 84-67 Win over James Madison

Senior forward Vernessa Neamo scored 18 points to lead three Patriots in double figures, as no. 2 seed George Mason beat no. 7 seed James Madison University, 84-67, in the first quarterfinal game of the 2004 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Basketball Championship yesterday at the Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk.
Neamo shot 50 percent from the floor, hitting on 7-of-14 field-goal attempts, as the Patriots shot a season-high 52.7 percent (29-for-55) from the field overall. Junior guard Laura Kooij scored 17 points, shooting 50 percent (6-for-12) from the field, and senior guard Jen Derevjanik added 15 points for the Patriots.
With the win, Mason improves to 17-9 on the season and advances to today’s first semifinal game at 5 p.m., where it will face sixth-seeded Virginia Commonwealth University.
The championship game will be played at noon on Saturday.
