Jesse Pellot-Rosa’s free throw with 1.6 seconds left gave Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) a 55-54 victory over George Mason in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship game held at the Richmond Coliseum last night.
The top-seeded Rams led almost the entire game until George Mason’s Tony Skinn’s 3-pointer tied it with 9 seconds to play for the third-seeded Patriots. VCU won their first CAA title–and NCAA tournament berth–since 1996.
The Rams seemed to have put the game away several times earlier, but the Patriots rallied each time behind Skinn, whose 17 points all came after halftime, and Jai Lewis, who
scored 16 points.
