“Homecoming 2004: Patriot Paradise” begins today and concludes Saturday, Feb. 21, with a men’s basketball game, fireworks, and a luau.

Featured events on the Fairfax Campus include a Caribbean craft corner in the Johnson Center tomorrow, a Mason Idol competition on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Harris Theatre, and a comedy and talent show on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Dewberry Hall. Pirates of the Caribbean will be shown in the Johnson Center Cinema at 6 and 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Today is the deadline for the Homecoming faculty and staff banner competition. Offices and departments are encouraged to make a Homecoming spirit banner that will be displayed in the Johnson Center this week and in the Patriot Center on Feb. 21 during the men’s basketball game against the University of Delaware Blue Hens. George Mason faculty and staff members are encouraged to attend the block party in Parking Lot L on Saturday preceding the basketball game. Lot L opens at 11 a.m., and the block party lasts from 1 to 4 p.m. The block party will have a more spirited atmosphere with the addition of a Best Decorated Block Contest. Participants are encouraged to enhance their pregame festivities by decorating their designated space using the Patriot Paradise and basketball themes. Judging begins at 2 p.m., with winners announced at 3 p.m. The judges are Peter Stearns, provost; Stacey Remick-Simkins, Staff Senate chair; and Brian Drummond, Alumni Association president. A wagon full of tailgating goodies will be awarded to the winner.

Faculty and staff can purchase discounted game tickets in advance for $6 by Wednesday, Feb. 18, or $11 afterwards. The game starts at 4:30 p.m. For more information on tickets, call 703-993-3270. A fireworks display at Mason Pond follows the game, and the luau begins at 7 p.m. in Dewberry Hall.

The Prince William Campus will have many activities as well, with Tropical Spirit Day and Craft Corner tomorrow, Tropical Mocktail Happy Hour on Wednesday, and a tropical lunch special on Thursday. The Arlington Campus will host a Hawaiian luau in the student lounge tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
