John Spaldo has been named the assistant vice president of University Services. He replaces Ken Bumgarner, who retired last year. Spaldo has been acting interim assistant vice president since January 2003, and he has been with George Mason since 1981. He has had increasing responsibilities in the areas of student unions operations and auxiliary services.
Spaldo has two primary goals in 2004: making University Services as technologically adept as possible and emphasizing the strategic and capital planning for University Services. The technology aspect includes moving to a new ID card system and updating and creating web sites for all offices. “Ideally we would like students, faculty, and staff members to have the option of paying their parking tickets online,” he says. Spaldo also notes that the planning is extremely important with Housing VI opening this fall and a new parking deck already under construction.
Since 1995, Spaldo has been the operations director for the Johnson Center and Student Unions. Over the years, he has been directly involved in several facilities construction and renovation projects and is actively serving as co-chair of the Auxiliary Enterprises Management Council. Spaldo also participates on the University Process Improvement Council, Quality of Worklife Committee (presidential appointment), Johnson Center Policy Board, Northeast Sector Planning Task Force, and the Crisis Planning Committee, among other committees.
“We look forward to John leading the University Services programs as George Mason continues to increase student enrollment, construct additional facilities, and house more on-campus residential students,” says Senior Vice President Maurice Scherrens.
